September-November 2004/Shanghai

November 26th, 2004 Posted in 2004, Shanghai

The Majumdars have finally made the transition from Taipei to Shanghai. The boys are all going to new schools, and they have adjusted well, even though they miss their friends in Taipei. Shaun and Jay have switched from the British system to the American system. We have kept Rowan in the British school system, as we believe that the British curriculum maintains a stronger base in reading and math in the very early years.

For us the move also means living right in the heart of the city…..not something we lifelong suburban dwellers are used to, but we are enjoying being in the center of a city of 21 million people. It is an interesting experience for the kids as well as the parents. Papi can walk to work, and we can explore many of the interesting markets, parks and restaurants right outside our door.

It took us until October to get settled in, and Rajjina has done a wonderful job of setting up the new house. We know we are back to our routine, as we are shuttling all 3 boys to soccer games. For a stretch, Shaun was actually playing on 3 teams (school, club and international teams). Thankfully, as the seasons wound down, he is back to one team only. We are also taking the time to discover this fast growing city. We managed to celebrate both Halloween and Thanksgiving here. In fact, for Thanksgiving, our friends, the Conlons came from Taiwan, and we had 7 boys in the house for that long weekend. We look forward to seeing many more of our friends and family here. We are ready to host you.

Keep in Touch,

The Majumdars

Perspective:

” I like the American School better than the British School. In the British School, the teachers talked for 30 minutes, and we worked for 10 minutes. In the American School, the teachers talk for 10 minutes and we get to do things for 30 minutes.”
