January/February 2003/Hakuba
February 26th, 2003 Posted in 2003, HakubaNew Year’s was a perfect time for the Majumdar clan to get out of Taiwan and do some skiing in Hakuba. This range known as the Japanese Alps was amazingly breath-taking. It was every bit as good as Rocky Mountain skiing with less people on the mountain. This was the site of the 1994 Nagano Olympics. It took Sareet a full 15 minutes to complete the much tamer top to bottom downhill course. World Champions generally do it in under 2 minutes. Unfortunately for us, Rowan broke his leg skiing, which kept Hakuba’s only video store in business. For all our radiologist friends, we have posted the x-ray.
Our Taiwan Ski Club Group was led by Uncle Willi, who organized the entire trip. Thanks to his assistance, Shaun has already passed Papi by on the slopes, and Jay will be sure to follow next year. They both had a lot of fun skiing with their friends and school mates Massimo, Stephen, Gian Lucca and Sebastian. Rajjina’s toughest workout was not skiing. She carried Rowan and his seemingly 10 lb. cast up a mountain trail to see Japan’s famous hot-spring bathing Snow Monkeys (See video).
When we returned to Taiwan, the boys kept busy with school and finishing out the soccer season. Shaun’s Blast and Jay’s Hawks did very well throughout the season, and the boys continued to work hard at their favorite sport. We managed to squeeze in the Scout Pinewood Derby, and Shaun and Jay were fortunate to finish first and second respectively. They were very excited about their trophies, especially Shaun, who had one of the slowest cars the first year he competed.
Our life is back to a normal routine, and we all look forward to seeing Grandma in March.
Keep in Touch,
The Majumdars
