When school starts, we parents become chauffeurs, fans, tutors and motivators. This year, both Shaun and Jay were active in Cross Country, with Shaun giving up soccer to pursue cross country and track, and with Jay using it more for his fitness in Club Soccer. Rowan also continued both his Club Soccer and School swimming pursuits.
Cross Country running is a very interesting sport, where the participants will tell you: 1) The best players get the least playing time, 2) Team scores are done by a combination of ordinal placements, which means a team is literally as strong as its weakest of 5 scoring runners. Shaun has truly found his passion with this. His years of soccer seem to have helped his competitive spirit in finding a very unique team yet individual sport, and he has really enjoyed the friendships and camaraderie with his teammates. His team, led by an outstanding and motivational senior, Tyler, was able to win their Districts, placed 2nd in the regional and finish 5th at State, despite being moved up a classification this year by the Florida High School Athletic Association. Jay also participated at the JV level, mainly to get in great shape for his soccer, which he also practiced 3 times a week in addition to his Cross Country commitment.
As a result, Mom has been especially busy driving the kids to every conceivable practice, game and tournament. Papi went to North Carolina for the Great American Race that may become an annual tradition for the team. Shaun also got his first “pub” with a small mention in the local paper, when his team won districts.
