Sept-Oct 2008/Ireland & World Series

October 30th, 2008 Posted in 2008, Ireland, World Series

For the third year in a row, Sareet went on his annual pilgrimage to the best courses in Ireland. After focusing on northeastern and northwestern Ireland the past two years, our fearless leader Quinn directed us to the great courses around Dublin. We played Druid’s Glen, the European Club , and Port Marnock.  Sareet can now rate his Top 10 golf courses in Ireland as follows:

1) Old Head: www.oldhead.com

2) Ballybunion: www.ballybuniongolfclub.ie

3) Carne (Belmullet): www.carnegolflinks.com

4) European Club: www.theeuropeanclub.com

5) Enniscrone Golf Club: www.enniscronegolf.com

6) County Sligo (Rosses Point): www.countysligolfclub.ie

7) Donegal Golf Club (Murvagh): www.donegalgolfclub.ie

8 ) Lahinch: www.lahinchgolf.com

9) Port Marnock: www.portmarnockgolfclub.com

10) Druid’s Glen: www.druidsglen.ie

Sareet’s trip was truncated by a short business trip to Germany, but there was still ample pub time and the final day of golf was replaced by a memorable trip to Croke Park for the All Ireland Hurling Championships. The Hurling “Super Bowl” to give it an American context was one of the most interesting sporting events Sareet has ever witnessed. The Gaelic sport of hurling is a combination of field hockey, rugby, lacrosse and soccer. The object of the game is to score 3 points in a netted goal below field goal posts, or score 1 point in what we call a field goal. The 15 v. 15 physical game is unique in combining agility, power, speed and accuracy. It was easy to become a fan in one game of watching Kilkenny easily outclass Waterford in the final.

The sports theme for the month continued as the Tampa Bay Rays made it all the way to the World Series. With their league lowest payroll, we figured we would take advantage of the fact that the ALCS and World Series were in town to root on the hometown Rays. The boys were pretty excited to participate in October baseball in Florida, even though the Rays eventually did lose to the Phillies. We finished up the month with Halloween, and we only have Rowan (and Papi the Rasta-man) left as true trick or treaters.

Keep in Touch!
