July-August 2006/Vietnam-Cambodia

The Family wrapped up their American Summer by visiting their cousins in New York and Connecticut. It was a true family reunion, as Rajjina’s brothers, all the cousins, Marianne and Elias all came for a weekend in Connecticut. Shaun and Jay, under the careful direction of their cousin Jeremy, put together an independent film called The Manure Shop (see 10 minute video). If they gave out Oscars for 10 year olds, this would have to be submitted for consideration. This is destined to become a classic.

While we were in the Northeast, we decided to go to Boston for two days, where we walked the Freedom Trail, learned about Paul Revere, Samuel Adams and other famous American patriots. We learned that if it were not for the Longfellow poem, Paul Revere would probably never have been remembered and most likely he did not lead the ride at all. The boys also visited Sareet’s old college in Connecticut, and we met his former Crew coach, Dave. We then checked out the sights of Manhattan, including the Empire State Building, a very interesting Snake and Lizard exhibit at the Natural History Museum, and the interactive tour at the Sony “Museum” (What a great marketing concept…..put your products on display for kids to play with…….get them hooked on your brand, and call it a Museum). It was fun though, and we do recommend it.

Finally, it was time to head back to Shanghai and get ready for another school year. Rajjina’s brother Ranjit and his family followed us back and spent a couple of weeks with us in Shanghai and Beijing. We all spent a weekend in Beijing visiting the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, the Ming Tombs and watching the amazing construction throughout the city in preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games. The highlight of the trip for the kids was luging down the Great Wall on a special luge track. We chose to visit a less frequented part of the Great Wall at Mutianyu which we highly recommend for those of you with children. We are expecting many friends and family members to visit us this year and look forward to showing you all around.

Keep in Touch,
