Jan-Feb 2009/Utah & Super Bowl

February 26th, 2009 Posted in 2009, Super Bowl, Utah

Super Bowl XLIII  (Seems funny that they give Roman numerals to a modern day sporting event that is not played in the Roman Coliseum) came to Tampa, which it tends to do every X (ten)  years or so, and we got an opportunity to get tickets to the game.   Papi and the boys enjoyed one of the most exciting Super Bowls in History, as we saw the Steelers come back and beat the Cardinals on a beautiful night in Tampa.   The boys even enjoyed some of Bruce Springsteen’s music at halftime, even though they were disappointed he did not sing “Born in the USA.” The Harrison interception return at the end of the first half and Holmes’ catch at the end of the game will be remembered for years to come.   It was an exciting sports year in the Tampa Bay area with a Super Bowl and World Series just months apart.

Papi also began riding his now street-legal motorcycle with sidecar that he brought back from China, when we moved.  After WW II, the BMW motorcycle factory in East Germany was dismantled by the Russians, and the tools for those bikes were taken to Russia.  They were eventually moved to China, where the Chinese continued to have military uses for those bikes into the 1970’s.  More recently, some enterprising business people were restoring old bikes from the various parts, and Sareet managed to bring one into the US and rides it with the boys in our neighborhood.

We took our annual skiing pilgrimage to Salt Lake City and skied both Park City and Deer Valley.    Jay joined us a day late again, because of a soccer conflict, but the boys had fun skiing for the 4 day President’s holiday.  We met our friends the Kinlins there once again, and it was a good chance to catch up.    Deer Valley was the prim and proper resort (no boarders, of course), and we found it a bit too sterile for our tastes.  The blaring music, terrain parks and open bowls of Park City were a lot more fun for all of us.  The family-friendly town was easily accessible and very convenient for great dinners each evening.  Eventually, we will come back here again and explore some of the other resorts.

Keep in touch!
